The price of the Volocopter will depend to a large extent upon the demand and the resulting economies of scale in the production. Thus it may reach the price level of an upmarket automobile in a few years time. The first models will be much more expensive due to their one-off production.
The simple and secure control of the Volocopter makes it possible for you to have your own license in the foreseeable future. The requirements for this pilot’s license of the new Volocopter aviation class are currently being compiled in cooperation with the German aviation authorities. We believe that the amount of time and expense involved in acquiring a Volocopter pilot’s license should in the long-term amount to the same time you would require to obtain a car driver’s license.
It is our goal to conclude the Volocopter approval process and the creation of its own aviation class with the linked pilot's license in the near future. Once the approval process has been completed the first flying schools will be supplied with Volocopters.
We expect that the Volocopter will be much more economical in operation than conventional helicopters. Subject to the requirement of corresponding production volumes and thus a cheaper purchase price the running of a Volocopter should be as cheap in the medium-term as the running of a car.
They will be much cheaper than the costs for conventional aircraft as there is no combustion engine and hardly any moving parts beyond the ball bearings in the motors. In addition the self-diagnosis function enables a quick overview of the current state of the components installed in the aircraft.
Currently about 2 hours, but a quick change battery system is in the planning process and will probably be available at the point of the commercial start of operations.
The 18 motors of the Volocopter perfectly cover the necessary rotor surface in a circular manner. In combination they offer the highest levels of security, performance and efficiency. Our IP-protected arrangement of 18 rotors, distributed between 2 circuits, offers considerable efficiency and safety benefits compared, for instance, with the use of 16 rotors in an eightfold coaxial arrangement.
Up to 4 motors can cease functioning, the Volocopter can then still always be landed safely.
The intelligent and multiply redundant control system (Fly-by-Wire) allows the Volocopter to fly safely. Due to the fact that the control system of the Volocopter adjusts itself in the air several times per second the pilot merely has to specify the direction in which he wants to fly. Everything is performed by the flight control system. In extreme cases the Volocopter has a parachute rescue system that cannot be used in other vertical takeoff aircraft due to their design.
The range of the Volocopter depends on the capacity of the available batteries. It has already greatly improved since the early days of the Volocopter and a lot of application cases can already be covered purely through the use of electricity in combination with a rechargeable battery system. In addition we pursue the integration of an appropriate hybrid motor to further increase flying time up to several hours.
Yes, the Volocopter is much more pleasant in terms of its acoustics due to its design and above all much quieter than conventional helicopters.
We are convinced that the Volocopter will conquer the world. To begin with we will tackle the hurdle of approval in the ultralight sector. In parallel with this we are planning to construct a larger, commercial model, the VC400 with a large range and load capacity. The necessary approval for an aircraft of this class with the competent European aviation authority (EASA) is very time consuming and expensive. Set against this backdrop we will launch this process as early as possible and use the intervening time require to penetrate foreign markets and simultaneously equip air rescue services and authorities with Volocopters.
The Volocopter offers very diverse application areas. Ranging from its use for private transportation and as a VIP shuttle to automated, public transport systems or even rides in amusement parks, there are no limits to its potential applications. The Volocopter will additionally be designed as a multifunction drone because it is a platform that can fly both using remote controls and also entirely autonomously. In this case the cockpit will be replaced by a heavy load module weighing up to several hundred kilograms, that assumes various tasks, e.g.: measuring instruments, tanks or freight modules. We have already received various development queries concerning special application fields. A much bigger design is also possible here.
The Volocopter should become the means of transportation of the future! The ideal sales partner invests in our idea and can provide a sales & service infrastructure in accordance with our quality standards; and potentially even help construct the Volocopter factory of the future in his country.
